With more than 70 combined years of practical experience designing, developing, manufacturing, selling, repairing and racing high performance dinghies, sailboards and yachts, our Brisbane based team took on the challenge to design and produce a set of carbon fibre arm rests for the current triathlon version of the Canyon Speedmax SLX/CFR model utilising the standard Canyon cockpit base plate and any extension bar length, that are aerodynamically optimised for elite age group and professional triathlon racing.

The problem with the standard or upgraded arm rests that Canyon supply, is that there are a number of air gaps and hard edges between and underneath the arms rests that create considerable drag, as they are all ‘surprises’ for the airflow that the apparent wind does not like!

In addition, increasing angle of attack on your arm rests more than 10 degrees only presents more holes and edges for the apparent wind to be surprised. However our RACE ARMS were designed to be used at an angle of attack up to 25 degrees, so it can deflect air around cleanly and smoothly the upper body and away from the huge air gap between your upper arms and into the chest area. This air gap is a low pressure area, so the more you can fill this area with your head, drink bottles and arms, the lower your CdA will be.

So after making a time consuming two piece prototype in mid 2024, it became obvious we were onto something, because any elite age group triathlete who saw them, also wanted a set as well. But after making a limited number of sets from our first mould, we needed to make a new mould that would allow for quicker production times to meet increasing demand.

Therefore we took the opportunity to tweak the design a bit by softening the edges on the underside shell, make it a fixed width of 240mm, and extend the length up to 310mm to allow for longer extension bars.

These result was the all new V2 RACE ARMS, which are now made in one piece to make them more aerodynamic, stiffer and stronger, weighing only 360 grams including 10mm foam arm padding with CNC machined drainage channels.

We also opened up the top inside area of the arm rests a bit more to fit all your BTA accessories on the Canyon extension bar, but it could also be used as storage for new or used gels, without needing to move your hands too far from the handgrips.

These Australian made arm rests are currently only available for the Triathlon version of the Canyon Speedmax SLX/CFR, but unlike a lot of other custom made arm rests that are used by pro triathletes, our RACE ARMS do not have any large flat surfaces or hard edges/chines in the shell that actually induce turbulence, create lift and/or drag.
