Salar 40

SOLD! Salar 40's are legendary blue water and coastal cruising yachts famed for their solid construction, ease of handling, sea-kindly motion and comfortable accommodation. These classic Laurent Giles sloops have a long history of successful passage making throughout the sailing world. The semi-enclosed, wheel house covers the centre cockpit and has proved to be safe and comfortable at sea, providing excellent protection from sun, wind and waves and easy access to the sheet winches conveniently mounted inboard atop the aft cabin.

This Salar 40 was the first of her design to be built by prominent NZ boat builders, Salthouse Brothers. She is solidly constructed of hand laid Fibreglass with an appealing solid teak interior. Launched in Auckland in 1974, she was soon sailed to Sydney where she became a star attraction at the 1975 Sydney Boat Show. She has since sailed many offshore blue water passages, often short-handed including a return to New Zealand and passages to Fiji, Lord Howe Island and elsewhere throughout the South Pacific and Australian waters. She has current Australian Ships Registration to facilitate entry into foreign ports.

The sailing qualities of the Salar 40 are well proven. She has a mainsail fitted with three reefs, the primary headsail is fitted to a Furlex furler on the forestay and there are 3 more headsails. A conventional symmetric spinnaker or an Asymmetric cruising spinnaker provide a bit of downwind sparkle when necessary. There are twin alloy spinnaker poles enabling twin headsail wing and wing downwind sailing plus a set of storm sails. When not sailing or as an aid to progress in lighter airs, the 90HP Detroit diesel engine provides plenty of power to get you where you need to go in any conditions. While it is often considered that Motor-Sailers do neither well, that is certainly not the case with Salar 40s.

Comfortably appointed, this Salar 40 features a generous aft cabin with good headroom, double and single berth plus an enclosed ensuite with marine toilet and shower. The main cabin houses a well equipped Galley with Stove and Oven, Fridge and separate Freezer, Sink with Hot and Cold water and plenty of storage. There's also a Quarter berth, an inviting U shaped dinette around the saloon table with a settee berth opposite. The forward cabin has two single berths with an adjacent enclosed toilet and shower. There is good headroom and ample storage capacity throughout as befits a cruising yacht of this type.

She has Log, Speed, Depth and Wind electronics plus GPS and AutoPilot, Radar, an Electric windlass, 3 anchors with ample chain and warp and a 5 year old Life Raft (requires servicing). Other safety gear includes a First Aid kit, Life ring, Fire extinguishers. Radio communications include an Icom HF radio and a VHF radio. Her long-range fuel capacity is up to 800 Litres in two tanks and she carries up to 800 litres of fresh water. She comes with Manuals and many spares, including engine consumables.

"Salar Vee's" long-time owner is finally hanging up his well travelled sea boots after a lifetime of blue water adventures thus providing an opportunity for a new custodian to venture forth toward new horizons. And what better little ship in which to do that than this delightful Salar 40?
